McCain, Clinton look to next White House battle

Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, won a Republican race in Nevada that his rivals largely skipped in order to concentrate on South Carolina.

No candidate in either party has claimed the front-runner's role in the race to pick the two candidates to contest the November 4 election to succeed Bush, as the first major state-by-state battles produced multiple winners.

The US presidential nominating battle now turns to the deep South, where the next fights will be South Carolina's Democratic primary on Saturday and Florida's Republican primary on January 29.

Then both parties turn their attention to the February 5 "Super Tuesday" round of 22 state contests, a massive shift from the intimate politics of early voting states to coast-to-coast flights and big-budget advertising campaigns.

Entering the words "oil spill" in the Google News search engine returned more than 2,500 distinct articles published in the last 30 days on the topic. At the top of the news right now is the 100-foot fountain of petroleum that smothered the Canadian town of Burnaby this week, after a pipeline was pierced by a road-excavation crew. Fifty homes were evacuated and the contamination spread to the nearby Burrard Inlet, a harbor and wetlands ecosystem home to a variety of marine wildlife, inclding four species of salmon.

..In Massachussets, a state senator complained that four years after a "catastrophic" spill near Cape Cod, coastal waters are still vulnerable after the state's Oil Spill Prevention Act was largely nullified by a federal court. The U.S. Justice Department successfully argued that coastal regulation was the domain of the Coast Guard, not states.

Kirsten Dunst

Unless someone drove her and she spent the whole trip downing booze like a convict on death row. In which case, I only have one thing to say to that: Kirsten Dunst, will you marry me? Obviously not in a church. I know how holy water burns your vampire skin. See, baby, I notice the little things.

TheStar.com | News | More black-focused schools?

Hundreds of people were speaking in favour.

And I realized multiculturalism isn't about having a standard system for everyone, but working together to make sure we don't leave any group behind.

It's about understanding the cultural challenges some students face, not suspending them.

You know, some people think the community is being demanding, but people have been waiting 30 years for this kind of school. Actually, I think we've been pretty passive."

Stephnie Payne

"I voted against it because there was a process in place from four years ago, where the board began an Africentric committee to look at an inclusive, Africentric curriculum, the whole Africentric way of teaching. ... The committee members and myself did not think having a black school was appropriate for the reasons that it's not just the schools, it is the community and the parents and it starts in the home.

No change in Cuba policy, U.S. says

The lessons of this period we've gone through is that the Cuban revolutionary institutions are strong enough.''

One lingering question is whether Fidel's less charismatic brother can keep the socialist revolution going in the long-term.

Raúl is known as a man who leads by consensus. Most experts believe he will use the strength of the military, the Communist Party and National Assembly to keep a tight rein on political power while embracing economic changes to improve the daily lot of Cubans.

''Although they have some differences, they are one of a kind. They have the same interests, to stay in power,'' said Tony Alfonso, 70, a former political prisoner in Cuba. ``As long as there are no consequences, nothing is going to change. Liberate all the political prisoners, set the foundation for free elections, other than that it will just be cosmetic changes.''

And again, no one is totally counting Fidel out of the picture.
